Adventures in Potty Training

I read this week that the average age for potty training in the 1950s was between 12 and 18 months. Today, it is closer to 30-36 months. Read more interesting facts here.

Mothers potty trained earlier out of convenience. Cloth diapers were the norm then, and before the mid-50s, everyone had to rinse them out by hand & hang dry by the fireplace. The sooner the kids learned to use the toilet (or chamber pots), the sooner mom could quit hanging soiled diapers all over the house!  Today, we have modern conveniences like laundry machines (for the 5-10% who cloth diaper still) and disposable diapers. Out of sight, out of mind... right?

Maybe I gave up on cloth diapers, but my hope is that I can potty train Charlotte a little earlier than the new norm so that we can quit filling landfills with disposables. A girl can dream, right??

This week, she got familiar with the potty...

She's not too young for chores!! Haha! Just kidding! We bought this brush when we first moved into the house & Charlotte started playing with it before we even unwrapped it from the packaging. She drags it around & bangs it on the floor. So this is her "toy" brush & we bought another one to use for cleaning. I think it says a little something about her ability to mimic what she sees, since she knows what those brushes are for!!! :o) Yes, we're the weirdos who let their child have a toy toilet brush. Does that really surprise you?? hahahaha

Thank you for the interesting post about potty training! I'm so glad that I happened upon this info, and I'm going to try and START potty training my LO when she turns 18 mo. She's only 14 months now, but my mother (who was born in the mid-50's) kept on telling me that in her time children could be potty trained as early as 12 months! I thought she was crazy, but I guess like always...she was right!

I am right there with you friend. I have always felt children can be potty trained by 2 or 2 and a half at least, it just requires persistence. But in this fast paced world we live in, I think few people are willing to really stop and take the time to work at it. I plan on buying a potty insert for our toilet next month when the twins turn 18 months and sitting them on the potty. It is my hope that they will be completely potty trained by two. Some advice from my mom who has potty trained tons of kids: pull ups are a waste when potty training, they are just glorified diapers. Use them for night time only once they are potty trained. Use training underwear with a plastic/rubber cover while potty training. Spend a weekend home without running around and just work on putting them on the potty all day long. They will probably get the hang of it by the end of the weekend.
